china national intellectual property administration (cnipa) commissioner shen changyu met with drew hirshfeld, acting director of the united state patent and trademark office (uspto) via video on september 29.
"cnipa and uspto have overcome the difficulties caused by the covid-19 pandemic and have performed a series of pragmatic ip cooperation projects, benefiting companies and users of both countries," shen said. he added that the further development of such cooperation not just help both offices understand each other better, but a response to the voices of businesses in both countries. "we wish that the two sides take this meeting as an opportunity to build more pragmatic and efficient ip ties based on established results, and provide convenient, quality services for innovators and businesses of the two countries."
hirshfeld said that the u.s. attaches great importance to ip cooperation with china. he stressed that both uspto and cnipa are facing similar challenges, so the two offices can beef up communication and seek solutions to common challenge faced by other ip offices in the world. he hopes to further deepen practical cooperation with cnipa and expand cooperation fields.
during the meeting, the two sides shared views on specific joint projects, emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, ip-related measures under the covid-19 pandemic, ip incentive policies, and regulation of ip applications. cnipa principals from the ip protection department, ip utilization and promotion department, international cooperation department, examination affair department of patent office, and trademark office also attended the meeting.(by xue peiwen)
